With so many dog lovers out there, we knew the next kit we needed to create was of an adorable puppy. As fate would have it, Karissa began fostering this Australian Shepherd soon after we decided. This puppy was full of energy and personality, and we knew we had to try to capture him in a fun photoshoot.

Our goals were to have joyful close-up with tongue hanging out to give more detail, color, and texture to work on – of which he was happy to oblige! Black fur is notoriously difficult to render, so boosting the hues that were already there made it easier to translate  what you shadows and highlights and was really the most fun part of the drawing. It is against your instincts to grab a blue or purple when creating a realistic-looking animal, but if you put aside your preconceived ideas, it somehow works!

The out-of-focus field with a few pops of pink and yellow flowers made a quick and simple backdrop, allowing more time to spend on the foreground. We had so much fun drawing this one, and I know you will do this furry friend justice too!

If you are doing the kit, take the class with Karissa to meet our model Apollo and for some great tips and company while you draw.
